A Miracle

Here is what I was trying to figure out:
     how a miracle happens.
     A great work of art—
something that makes people pay attention,
return to the work again and again,
     and reexamine their assumptions,
something that infuriates, hurts, and confronts—
a great work of art is always a miracle.

Creating Change

The only way we really create change is
to enter any situation with the humility to listen
and to recognize the world as it is,
and then the audacity to dream what it could be.

Possibilities

Listen to the mustn'ts, child.
Listen to the don'ts.
Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts.
Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me...
Anything can happen, child.
Anything can be.

Metaphor is a way of thought

Intensity of Intention

What unites the different forms of pilgrimage
is intensity of intention,
the soul's desire to return to the center,
whether it portends ecstasy or agony.

Dream worth having

The only dream worth having ...
is to dream that you will live while you're alive,
and die only when you're dead.

Suffering & Happiness

The truth is: my suffering doesn't have to be
out of view for you to be happy, and you don't have
to quiet your grief for me to be peaceful.
Allowing our suffering and happiness to touch each
other opens a depth of compassion that helps us
     to complete each other.

My confidence comes from the belief that all human beings
resemble each other, that others carry wounds like mine – that
they will therefore understand.

Unsayable

This has always been the driving mystery
of all sacred wisdom:
The only thing worth saying are
those things that are unsayable.
